Unifi Business is a shared GPON service with symmetric headline speeds and a static IP add-on, while Maxis Dedicated Fiber rides TNB’s dark fiber with uncontended commit rates, a public IP block, and a 99.9% SLA. For a KL studio pushing 4K files or live SRT streams daily, the deciding factor is sustained upload during working hours, not the printed plan speed.
Contention Ratio: Dedicated vs Shared Throughput
Unifi Business terminates on the same GPON OLT pools as residential lines on the same TM exchange. In a strata tower in Bangsar South, Cyberjaya, or Sunway Geo, your 300/300 plan shares the PON with dozens of neighbouring units. TM advertises symmetric bandwidth but does not commit a floor, so an iperf3 test toward a Singapore VPS will show 65–80% of the plan rate during the 8pm peak — exactly when your studio runs cloud backups after the editing day. A 200GB LucidLink sync that should finish in 90 minutes stretches past two and a half hours.
Maxis Dedicated Fiber does not use GPON. It is a point-to-point or wavelength service provisioned over TNB’s underground fiber grid, quoted with a committed information rate (CIR). If you sign for 100Mbps, that is 100Mbps at noon on a Tuesday and still 100Mbps during a rainstorm in Petaling Jaya. For a studio, this is the single most important difference: an upload budget that holds flat across the working day instead of a headline speed that collapses when the neighbourhood wakes up.
Static IP Ranges for Remote Editing Rigs
Every studio in KL running remote editors exposes at least one public-facing service: a WireGuard tunnel for a freelancer pulling bins off a Synology NAS, a Source-Connect session for voiceover recording, or an SRT server for client review streams. Unifi Business ships with one dynamic public IP, and TM sells a single static IP as an add-on at roughly RM 30 per month. That works for one point-to-point tunnel, but you are left NAT-hairpining if you need to expose a render node, a Blackmagic Cloud endpoint, and a NAS simultaneously.
Maxis DIA includes a subnet by default — commonly a /30 (one usable IP) or a /29 (five usable IPs). Public addresses are assigned directly to your edge router or pfSense box, so each service gets its own IP with no double-NAT and no TM port-blocking policy on outbound mail or game servers. Studios running Intercom talkback, SRT ingestion, or MultiSite NAS replication will notice the cleaner reachability almost immediately. Match the /29 to your lease term; Maxis will happily sell you five usable IPs you do not need if you sign blind.
Latency and Jitter: KL Dark Fiber Routes
Both providers ultimately ride dark fiber inside KL, but the aggregation path differs. Unifi’s GPON layer adds 2–4ms of processing delay, and jitter swings with the OLT’s live load. If you are sending SRT or RTP audio to a mix engineer in Singapore, jitter spikes present as buffering and micro-dropouts. Observed from a studio in KL Eco City, Unifi Business held a 44ms average ping to ap-southeast-1 with occasional 8–12ms spikes around 8pm; a Maxis DIA line on the same path held a flat 35–36ms with sub-1ms jitter over a 24-hour window.
This matters only for real-time workflows: remote color grading via DaVinci Resolve Studio’s remote monitoring, synchronised session reviews on Frame.io, and live voice sessions over Source-Connect. If your studio only does store-and-forward transfers, Unifi’s jitter number is tolerable. If you do live client sessions, DIA’s routing through TNB’s core ring and Maxis’s own backbone is worth the price gap by itself.
SLA, Hardware, and Termination Clauses
Unifi Business is delivered with a D-Link or Askey gateway locked to TM’s profile, and the SLA is effectively best-effort. After a line outage, TM’s compensation is usually a pro-rated rebate only after 24 hours of downtime, leaving your studio to absorb the lost client session and the overtime labour. The support queue is shared with residential users, so a Monday-morning cable cut in a Mont Kiara studio competes with home streaming complaints.
Maxis DIA counters with a 99.9% monthly SLA, a 4–8 hour mean time to repair, and an enterprise CPE — typically a Cisco ISR or Huawei AR series router capable of BGP if you decide to multi-home. Site survey is mandatory, and non-recurring charges run between RM 1,000 and RM 2,500 depending on the building’s fiber access point. Contract terms run 12–36 months, and early termination bills the remaining monthly fees in full — the same trap exists on both sides. Sign the fiber contract to match the building lease; a 36-month DIA inside a serviced office on a 24-month lease is an unbreakable cost wall.
Matching Fiber to Studio Workload Scale
Few studios in KL need the full DIA stack. The tiers break down cleanly:
– Voice-over booths and podcast suites move 10–50GB per month. Unifi Business 300Mbps at RM 149–199 is enough; DIA is overkill.
– A 2–5 person video post house transferring 4K proxies and client cuts continuously should look at Maxis DIA 100Mbps if they serve foreign clients. Otherwise, Unifi Business 800Mbps at roughly RM 349/month with the backup window shifted to 2am–6am is a workable compromise.
– Broadcast and 4K RAW pipeline studios generating 500GB–2TB daily need the DIA 1Gbps tier with a /29 block. Editor idle time at RM 60–120 per hour means a contended line that stalls two hours every evening is a direct profitability leak.
